We wanted to provide an opportunity for you to get up close and personal with our osprey friends, Shanawdithit, her partner, Beaumont and their young.
Click on the video to enjoy a live camera feed of osprey nesting near the Virginia Waters Substation on Snow’s Lane in St. John’s. Please be advised that this live feed shows birds in their natural habitat, so events may occur unexpectedly and may not be appropriate for all viewers.
In 2016, we worked with Ornithologist Rob Bierregaard from Pennsylvania, who was very interested in tagging several Newfoundland osprey to track their migratory journey to and from their southern homes. You can also track Shanawdithit’s movements on Rob’s site.
Congratulations to Aurora Drew Hickey, an 11 year-old Grade 5 student at St. Francis of Assisi in Outer Cove, who is the winner of our “Name the Daddy Osprey” Competition. Aurora selected the name, Beaumount.
In the entry email that Aurora and her Mom sent to us, Aurora said, "Beaumont is to honour Newfoundlanders killed 101 years ago when the attack began on July 1, 1916."
When we launched the competition, we asked that students submit a name that has a very strong connection to the province, just like Shanawdithit. We agree with Aurora and feel that the name Beaumont is a very appropriate tribute to the brave soldiers who sacrificed their lives over 100 years ago.
