Standard Residential Rates

Temporary Service Fee

If you are requesting electrical service for less than a three-year period, you may be required to pay a "Temporary Service Fee". This fee is calculated using the estimated labour cost associated with the installation and removal of the power lines and equipment plus the estimated cost of any non-reusable material.

Temporary services are generally required for:

  • Construction shacks, commonly used during the initial construction stages of large buildings, subdivisions, highways and wharfs.
  • Seasonal services, such as Christmas tree lights, large special events, outside concerts and wharf services.

Residential Seasonal Rate

Customers billed on the Residential Seasonal Rate pay a different rate for electricity depending on the time of the year. Compare these rates and determine which is best for you.

Contribution In Aid Of Construction

When you request service from Newfoundland Power there is always a cost incurred by Newfoundland Power in providing that service. Your service connection may be as simple as installing a service wire between an existing pole and your home, or it may involve the construction of a new power line. Based on the location of your property in relation to the electrical system or your particular service requirements, you may be required to pay a cost associated with the provision of your electrical service.

Newfoundland Power is required to use one of two Contribution in Aid of Construction (CIAC) Policies to determine the amount, if any, that customers must pay towards the cost of providing electrical service.

The two policies are:

1) CIAC Policy For Distribution Line Extensions To Residential And Seasonal Residential Customers.

2) CIAC Policy For Distribution Line Extensions and Upgrades To General Service Customers.

The Board of Commissioners of Public Utilities of Newfoundland and Labrador have approved these Policies for use by Newfoundland Power and Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro. To ensure all customers throughout Newfoundland and Labrador are treated equally and without discrimination, both utilities are required to use the same CIAC Policies in assessing requests for electrical service.

If you plan to build a new house, building or cottage and require an electrical service, call Newfoundland Power in the preliminary stages of the design. A technician will be able to give you advice on the best location for your electrical service and an indication of whether or not a CIAC for electrical service will be required. If you plan to purchase a cottage and would like electrical service, contact Newfoundland Power to determine if a CIAC is required for that particular cottage area.
