Outage Alerts

It’s important to us that we stay connected with our customers, especially during power outages. Our Outage Alerts system enables us to send outgoing text and/or email messages directly to you when an outage is affecting your neighbourhood. Outage Alerts are used in addition to our other forms of outage communications such as our website and telephone service to keep you informed.

Sign Up Today!

By phone: Sign up for text message alerts by texting REG to 63797 (NFPWR). You will need your 10-digit Newfoundland Power account number (found on your electricity bill) and the last 4 digits of a phone number listed on your account.

Online: Log into your Newfoundland Power My Account to sign up for text and/or email Outage Alerts. You can add multiple mobile numbers and/or email addresses to any account.

Once you have successfully logged in, you will need to:

  1. Choose "Manage Outage Alerts" from the left-hand menu.
  2. Add the mobile number(s) and/or email address(es) you would like to receive outage alerts.
  3. Confirm your registration by replying "Y" to the text message and/or clicking the email link sent to you.
NOTE: If you do not have a My Account login, you can create one using your account number and meter number here.

What to Expect

Messages will be sent to you when there is an outage affecting your neighbourhood.

Planned outages are outages we schedule in advance to allow our crews to perform system upgrades and ensure the continued reliability of our system. For planned power interruptions, a message will be sent approximately 48 hours in advance of the outage detailing start and end times.

Unplanned power outages are unscheduled outages caused by high winds, snow and ice storms, lightning, and other severe weather conditions. They can also be caused by equipment problems, or third party contact with our electricity system such as vehicle accidents, fallen trees, and even animals.

Outage Alert Types:
  1. Initial Alert: Once information becomes available, an initial alert advises you that we are aware of an outage in your service area – the message may not be immediate. At this time our crews are likely investigating the problem.
  2. Update Alert(s): Updates will be provided when the cause and/or estimated restoration time of the outage is available or has changed.
  3. Restoration Alert(s): Message will be sent to you when power has been restored to all or most customers in the affected area. If you are still without power, check our website or call us for the latest information.

You can text any the following commands to 63797 (NFPWR):

  • REG to initiate registration.
  • STOP to unregister your account.
  • PAUSE to temporarily discontinue text alerts.
  • RESUME to resume alerts.

There may be instances where an alert may not be sent if an outage is isolated to a single home or street, or is very short in duration. In these situations, please contact our outage line at 1-800-474-5711 for information.

EMERGENCY AND SAFETY

For emergencies or hazardous conditions (such as downed wires, broken poles, etc.), please call 1-800-474-5711 immediately or your local emergency service provider. NEVER go near a downed power line or other potentially hazardous conditions involving electrical equipment. The ground around downed or low hanging power lines, as well as surrounding objects such as fences, could be energized.

Texting is offered at no charge by Newfoundland Power. However, standard text messaging and data rates may apply based on your plan with your mobile service provider. Newfoundland Power is not responsible for these charges. Before using, check with your mobile service provider for text messaging costs. Message frequency varies. We do not require your cell phone number to be registered in our records, but you will need your 10-digit Newfoundland Power account number and last 4 digits of a phone number we have currently listed on your account to complete your registration for Outage Alerts via your mobile phone.
